Our kidneys measures around 4.5 inches. It is like the size of your cell phone. Our kidneys weigh around 170 grams. The overall blood flow inside the kidneys is higher than the brain, liver, and heart. Kidneys receive around 60 liters of blood in an hour. Healthy kidneys pump around 1500 liters blood in a day. Our kidneys perform some major functions which are:
• It maintains and balances the amount of fluid in our body.
• It filters the blood around 400 times in a day.
• It removes waste, toxins, and excess fluid from the body.
• It helps in the making of some hormones as well.
Our kidneys contain around 1 million to 2 million tiny filters which are known as nephrons. After 40 years the ratio of functional nephrons starts depleting by the rate of 1% per year. Despite this declining, the kidneys of a person work in an effective manner. A single kidney of our can perform 75% of overall work of both the kidneys. A person can live with one kidney as well.
